Instant Addiction

While not the most elegant looking sweet treat, the can't-go-wrong combination of salty and sweet explains my family's name for it--crack.

To begin, you need:
—saltine crackers
—2 sticks of butter
—1 cup of light brown sugar
—1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Start by lining a cookie sheet with foil and spray the foil with cooking spray. Place the crackers close together in a single layer on the sheet.

Melt the butter and stir to dissolve the brown sugar.  Keep stirring until the mixture becomes light brown and frothy.

Pour the mixture over the crackers and use a spatula to spread it out so it covers all of the crackers.

Place the cookie sheet in a 425 degree oven for 3-5 minutes (until it looks bubbly all over).

Immediately sprinkle chocolate chips on top and let it sit for about a minute to warm up the chocolate.

Use a spatula to spread the melted chips.

Wait until the cookie sheet is cool enough to tough and then place in a freezer for about 20 minutes.  Then break up into bite-size pieces.  Yum!

Birdseed Ornaments

Here's a fun, simple craft that results in a nice treat for your backyard feathered friends.

To get started, you need birdseed, unflavored gelatin, cookie cutters, wax paper, and yarn/string/twine.

Begin by boiling a 1/3 cup of water.  Dissolve one packet of gelatin in the water and then add 1 cup of birdseed.  Mix and let sit for 5 minutes.  Then stir again.  If there is still liquid in the bottom of the bowl, add a little more birdseed and stir again.

Place cookie cutters on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper. Pack the birdseed into cookie cutters.  Part way through, lay a length of yard across the form.  Then pack more birdseed on top.  Refrigerate overnight.

Pop the ornaments out of the cookie cutters and allow to dry for several days on a rack.

I'm giving sweet treats and one of these to each family on our street.  I think these will make a fun little addition to the gift.
